How to replace a Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Receiver

The receiver is a main component in your Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan. If the fan is not working properly, it may be time to replace the receiver. The receiver acts like a “motor controller,” and manages the light and fan functions of a DC powered fan.

If you are replacing a regular DC motor receiver, the below steps will work. These steps are different if you are replacing a Hampton Bay Low Profile Ceiling Fan.

Regular Replacement of Hampton Bay DC Motor Ceiling Fan Receiver

You will need the following tools in order to complete this task:

  • Screwdriver
  • Wire cutters
  • Zip ties
  • Replacement receiver part ordered from customer service

Before you get started- an important safety step is always to turn off power at breaker so  you can’t get a shock.

Next is to disassemble the fan down to the motor. Use the fan owner’s manual for this step and assistance, or contact customer service. Here’s the rest of the steps:

  • With motor extracted, disassemble housing
  • Remove collar screws on motor coupling
  • Bump the sides of the motor to loosen housing
  • Lift off coupling
  • Cut any zip ties holding wires together
  • Unplug the connectors
  • Unplug the 9 pin connectors
  • If receiver is held down with 2 screws, use screwdriver to remove them
  • If receiver held down with double sided tape instead of screws, pry the receiver off of the motor
  • Bring new replacement receiver to motor
  • Place the receiver under the motor coupling
  • If original receiver used screws, reinstall or use mounting tape
  • Connect antenna connectors back, then reconnect 9 pin connectors
  • Use zip ties to fasten wires / secure them
  • Align top plate holes on housing

How do I replace a Hampton Bay ceiling fan switch?

With most ceiling fans that have pull chain switches, you’ll need to replace the switch. However, that’s not the case with every fan. On some Hampton Bay models, it’s possible that you can reattach the chain. An important thing to note – does this switch operate the light, or the fan? If you’re replacing a fan switch and not one that operates a light, you need to know: does the fan have three speeds? Or does your fan have more than three speeds (or even less). Most fans have three speeds, but if this is not the case, it’s important information.

Here’s the step by step on figuring this out:

  1. Like with most maintenance you’re doing to your Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan (or any appliance in your home really), turn the power off to the fan.
  2. Remove the cover on the housing of the ceiling fan, so you’re able to get to the switch. Loosen the nut on the outside of the switch, which is holding it in place.
  3. Pull out the switch from the housing. Make sure not to disturb the wires (leave them connected or you’ll wind up doing more work later).
  4. Take a look at the switch. Is the chain able to be reconnected without proceeding further? If so, you’re done!
  5. If not, then it’s time to jot down the wiring colors. Take a look at where the terminals connect to as well. Make a note of where all the wires connect to, and draw wiring diagrams. Take pictures with your phone or camera.

  1. Unplug the wires while preserving the terminals. Remove the switch, and write down the make and model of the ceiling fan. Take that information with the switch to a local retailer for a replacement. Home Depot is the primary reseller of Hampton Bay Ceiling Fans.
  2. When replacing the switch you need to know the number of speeds, the wattage of the switch, etc. That’s why learning the number of speeds earlier was important. The replacement switch needs to be the same everything as the existing switch.
  3. Install the new switch. Use the wiring diagrams or pictures you made earlier to re-attach the wires to the terminals. Then attach and tighten the screws
  4. Place the switch into the fan housing. Start threading the nut or nuts on the exterior
  5. Put the housing cover back on, or the globe cover, whichever you removed at the beginning!
  6. You’re done! Great job. Turn the breaker back on so you have power flowing to the fan again.

 

Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan Remote is Not Working

Is  your Hampton Bay ceiling fan remote not working properly? This is actually a common problem. There are many different solutions to this problem that you can try. Please let us know afterwards which solution worked for you – we’ll be happy to hear more, and post your solution to the website.

Here is one thing a site visitor tried. This worked for a number of site visitors, so see if it works for you:

  • Turn off the power with the remote. Within 30 seconds of turning the power back on again, hold down the fan off button for 10 seconds and this will perform a reset.
  • Did you try replacing the batteries in the remote, as well as removing them and putting them back in again?
  • Did you check the dip switches? Are the dip switches set correctly? If the dip switch settings are changed, the remote won’t be able to communicate with the fan.
  • Try turning the circuit breaker off to the fan, then turn it back on. Hold down the light or fan button for 10 seconds.
  • Try putting the dip switches back into the original position, turn the light switch off. Then, hold the off button for 10 seconds. Turn the light switch back on again. Does the remote work now?

These steps ultimately take into account the idea that the remote needs to be reset, but the dip switches also need to be set correctly. Sometimes, these steps mentioned work to clear any logic settings that may be misbehaving with the remote and the receiver.

Other reasons why the remote is not working, includes the concept that the receiver may have failed. If the above troubleshooting fails, the next step is to get a ladder out and take a look at the receiver. If you’re not sure how to access the receiver, it’s located inside the canopy. The canopy is just above the lights and below the blades inside of your ceiling fan housing. If the receiver unit appears to be damaged, or melted slightly, it needs to be replaced. A replacement receiver can be purchased at a local retailer, and are generally inexpensive around $30.
